Hype4Life… has such a nice ring to it doesn’t it? Ok, maybe not if you don’t really have an idea of what it means. It’s pretty cool if you ask me so let me fill you in. About 4 years ago, my dad was walking into a mall carrying our youngest son. Christopher was about 18 months old at the time. I know it rings of cliche-ish tones but still… it was one missed step on this seemingly casual stroll into the mall that changed my life forever. Again, I know that seems dramatically overstated, but it is the real deal for me. Here’s why… my dad was having depth perception problems because his vision had been ruined by years of living with undiagnosed glaucoma. What that means in this little tale… my dad was trying to step up onto the curb and he ended up tripping and falling with our baby boy. Looking back on it, it was amazing to watch him fold everything around little Christopher and protect him from the impact of the fall. I think he did what any grandfather would do and his efforts were successful. Dad got a little scuffed up. Enough for mom to yell at him for messing up his shirt but young Christopher was unharmed. We all joked about it a bit once we knew everyone was okay.
I didn’t know it at the time, but this event was going to inspire me to chase life change. Dad’s vision had eroded to nearly nothing. He also had several other health issues that were pressing at the time. We are talking dangerously high blood pressure. Possible strokes that may have caused additional eye trauma. The list goes on. Dad has worked to get in better health now but his vision can’t be repaired. This impairment for him is also a struggle for me. It hurts my heart every time we visit my parents. I always envisioned my dad seeing my boys grow up. It was at the top of the cool list for me as a dad. Every time my boys are with him, it saddens me to know he can’t see how they are growing. It was the pain from seeing my dad go through this that got me focused on becoming more intentional in my life.
It inspired me to try and be proactive. It inspired me to get in the trenches as best I could and fight the better health and fitness fight. I am committed to trying to inspire others because their success inspires me and it feels right. That is what Hype4Life is to me, and that is what landed me here. I am trying my best to be diligent and consistent about staying Hype4Life. In doing so I have made some incredible relationships with some fantastic people. I reached out to some of them and graciously they agreed to have my back in the Hype4Life dream. It warms my heart to know that I now have a Hype4Life team that is growing together. A team that wants to see others do the same. A team that is recruiting others to follow my lead. My lead… that is a responsibility that I cherish and feel blessed to have. I have been able to share so many incredible moments with new people through their fitness journey. Half marathons. Tough Mudders. Weight loss challenges. Fitness challenges. Basketball workouts. Boxing workouts. Just to name a few. We are having fun working out but more importantly we are sharing life together… changing our lives together.
